Shock Absorbing Treadmill – Avoids Injury to your Legs
There are many different aspects to consider when you purchase a new treadmill. One of the areas to assess is the ability of the treadmill to absorb shocks. A shock absorbing treadmill will absorb some of the shock from your legs each time your foot touches the tread. This is particularly important if you plan to be running on your treadmill and will be doing a great deal of exercise on the treadmill. The deck of the treadmill is the primary element that provides the absorption of the shock and avoids or reduces the amount of shock that is transferred to your legs and specifically to your joints and shines. The more expensive treadmills will have a deck that floats on the treadmill frame and absorbs some of the shock. Each time your foot touches the tread, this pounding can damage your joints and anything you can do to decrease this will prolong the enjoyment you get from exercising on your treadmill.
Shock absorbing treadmills that have a floating deck to absorb shocks from the pounding of a high-speed run, should not allow any lateral movement of the deck. Lateral movement puts additional stress on your joints and any treadmill that allows movement either forward or backwards will make your run seem as if you are running on a continuously shifting surface. This will provide an uncomfortable run, and may even cause you to avoid using your treadmill over time.
The size of the treadmill vs. the size and weight of the person that will used the treadmill will also be a factor for many people using absorbing treadmills for their exercise. However, a large person using a small treadmill may not find that the shock absorption is quite as efficient as it would be on some of the larger treadmills with larger stronger frames and decks. These larger machines are built to withstand greater stress and are able to provide better absorption of the impact from heavier people on a high speed run or even a fast walk.
