Calculating your Target Heart Rate

First off you need to know your resting heart rate. Resting heart rate is your heart rate at rest. The best time to calculate your resting heart rate is in the morning before you get out of bed according to the American Heart Association. The American Heart Association also says that the heart beats 60 to 80 times a minute at rest. As we age, your resting heart rate increases. People who are physically fit have a lower resting heart rate. Knowing your resting heart rate is important to calculating your target heart rate.

Now on to Target Heart Rates:

Knowing your target heart rate will keep you from burning out and help you work out hard enough to burn fat. It is best to work out between 50% and 75% of your heart rate. To calculate this, take 220- your age. I’m 33 years old so my maximum heart rate is 187. Then figure out what your heart rate would be between 50% and 75%. Mine would be between 94 and 140 beats per minute. Use the chart below from the American Heart Association to find out your target heart rate.
